New International Airport for Mexico City – BIM Project

 Project summary:

Planned area: 555,000 m2 for the passenger terminal. Building 1.5 km long.

Additionally, the Control Tower, Ground Transportation Centre and auxiliary buildings.

BIM level of development: on a Basic Project models will generally be LOD 200 and reach LOD 300 at the end of the Construction Project.

Client: GACM, Grupo Aeroportuario Ciudad de México (Mexico City Airport Group), Communications and Transport Ministry. Government of Mexico.

Confidential project currently in the Construction Project stage of development.

This is not a single model; it is the sum of many. In architecture, at the moment there are around 120 models broken up by area and discipline; for the roof 130 models; and for fixtures and structures advisers 35 models.

Purpose of using BIM:

In this project the ultimate aim of developing BIM is to:

  • Create plans
  • Analyse engineering
  • Visualise
  • Programme spaces
  • Review design
  • Coordinate 3D (early detection of interferences)
  • Calculate thermal loads

Most plans are being produced using BIM (5,000 plans).

The structures and installations engineering firm is an international consultancy based in New York, with local sub-consultants in Mexico. Coordination between the architect (FP-FREE) and engineers is done through weekly exchange of models and significant e-mail communication, weekly meetings, fortnightly workshops and videoconferences.

Success achieved:

All disciplines use BIM methodology; also Structures, Installations, and the whole baggage handling system. They all generate models that we integrate into a single federated model.

In terms of architectural design, given the singularity of the project, many platforms are used, which are subsequently integrated into an architectural BIM model.

The use of BIM is becoming essential as a tool for coordination between disciplines, and as a tool for documentation, given that the majority of plan production is done using BIMs.

Information management (management of families, individual room records, etc.) would not have been possible without BIM tools, given its size and complexity. It was necessary to develop specific tools to be able to handle the size and complex geometry.

We are working directly with Autodesk to develop in greater depth programmes such as Revit or Dynamo in order to handle this project.
