We visited the National Hydrogen Center in Puertollano

National Hydrogen Center

It has been a visit to scale in the knowledge of hydrogen as an energy source and in the main developments and projects related to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies that, from the CNH2 are at the service of the entire scientific, technological and industrial community.

On September 29th, TECNIBERIA’s Industry and Energy Commission, headed by its president, Joaquín de Hita, visited the CNH2, which has its headquarters in Puertollano (Ciudad Real).

This public entity is 50% owned by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and 50% by the Regional Government of Castilla La Mancha.

This research and development center covers the entire hydrogen and fuel cell value chain, both as an energy vector and as a raw material.

The institution has different laboratories and auxiliary facilities to cover every part of the value chain, from production and storage to transformation and integration in different stationary and mobility applications.

During the visit, the director of CNH2, Emilio Nieto, presented the main R&D&I lines of its 2019-2022 Strategic Plan, which are the basis for the development of its research lines and both external and internal activities, as well as the capacity of its laboratories.

Among these lines are:

The strategic line of hydrogen production, storage and distribution;

Hydrogen transformation;

The line that encompasses the activities that integrate hydrogen-based systems in a final application;

And finally the strategic line of technological implementation that focuses on the development and execution of different activities focused on types of studies, advice and processing for the technological implementation of hydrogen and fuel cell-based solutions.

 Likewise, some of the main projects developed at CNH2 in its twelve years

of operation were presented to the attendees.

Work and research that foresee the great potential of hydrogen to become a fundamental part of the energy future.

Among these projects, H2Ports stands out, which proposes different pilots applied to the port industry of Valencia:

A first prototype will consist of a reach stacker vehicle powered by hydrogen and tested in a real test, in a port container terminal;

A second prototype will consist of a yard tractor equipped with a fuel cell stacker for testing in the loading/unloading operations of a Ro-Ro terminal;

And a third prototype will consist of a mobile hydrogen supply station, which will provide the necessary fuel in the right conditions and quantity to ensure continuous duty cycles of the above mentioned equipment.

The H2Ports project also has as a transversal objective the realization of feasibility studies for the development of a sustainable hydrogen supply chain in the port of Valencia, coordinating all the actors involved: customers, hydrogen producers, suppliers, etc.

They have been able to visit the different laboratories of the Center, highlighting, among others, those of alkaline electrolysis technology, PEM battery technology, SOFC technology, vehicles, applications in domestic integration, as well as the hydrogen station – hydrogen refueling station.

Both the president of the Industry and Energy Commission of TECNIBERIA, Joaquín de Hita, and the rest of the associated companies that participated in the visit, thanked the CNH2 managers for the attention given during the visit, in which it has been possible to confirm that the knowledge accumulated by the CNH2 is essential to continue climbing in the knowledge of hydrogen as an energy source and contribute to the strategy of Spain on the road to energy transition.
